Turkey's position on Islam

Turkey has recently updated its official position on Islam, keen to show
that Islam and democracy can live together. Whilst, Turkey still upholds
its strong family values, it has adopted a very liberal approach to Islam,
incorporating their modern lifestyle and culture. Turkey does not wish to
compromise their identity to “fit in” with the European Union, and
therefore is not choosing to be a secular state (an impossible feat since
extremely high proportions consider themselves to be practising Muslims).
However this new liberal view of Islam has not been accepted favourably by
religious leaders in Turkey and the surrounding region.
